The last time the Southern Maryland Senators faced the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts at home, a 10-1 lead was blown by the top of the ninth inning. This time, a similar scenario almost happened to the Senators, as they nearly faced the same case that occurred two weeks ago. However, they got away with a win in this one, 9-8.
After a scoreless first inning, designated hitter Brayden Foster and third baseman Ryan Cuadros scored after a single by second baseman Mike Heckman. Then comes another runner, as shortstop Josh Erd hit an RBI single, landing first baseman Andrew Powers home.
Down 3-0, the Senators scored five unanswered runs. Shortstop Mike Sweeney hit a two-run RBI double, scoring third baseman Mikey Guy and center fielder Owen DeShazo.
Soon after, two more runs came in from Sweeney and second baseman Sylas Boris, as designated hitter Nathan Brewer hit a two-run RBI single. To end the inning, Carter Groen blasted an RBI single, allowing left fielder Rohan Putz to score, putting the Senators up by two.
In the bottom of the fifth, Guy hit a triple to right field, bringing DeShazo and catcher Nate McHugh home. The two final runs came in after Boris hit a sacrifice fly to score Guy, and Brewer hit an RBI single, scoring Sweeney.
Trouble came for Southern Maryland in the eighth inning. Pitcher Landon Friedman allowed a single from catcher Jack McCarthy and walked Powers before being pulled for pitcher Dawson Wetherald.
Heckman hit a single, advancing all runners and leaving the bases loaded. Immediately, Erd hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and McCarthy scored. Then center fielder Jeff Sabater hit an RBI single, scoring Powers. The inning would end with Foster hitting a two-run RBI triple to center field, scoring Heckman and Sabater.
Wetherald would be pulled for pitcher Waylon Sebren as he finished the inning.
Down by two, Powers hit a solo home run to deep right field, cutting the Senators lead down by one. But a five-run comeback was not enough for the Thunderbolts, as they fell to the Senators 8-9.
Southern Maryland will return home Monday night against the Metro South County Braves at 7:00 PM.
