Battling against the Gaithersburg Giants in a close game, the Southern Maryland Senators pulled away in the eighth inning to win their home opener.
Through six innings of baseball, both teams only scored one run each, thanks to strong pitching performances by Mark Loubier (FAU) and Griffin Seibel (Quinnipiac) for the Senators and Nicholas Karls and Jaden Ovalles for the Giants.
In the top of the seventh, the Giants scored two runs to gain the lead. But it was only for a short time as the Senators followed with two runs to even the score at three.
With the bases loaded, Nick Flores (VCU) drew a walk, bringing Ky Queen (Norfolk) home. Later in that same inning, a wild pitch allowed Jack Euart (Wofford) to come in and score.
The Giants would score two more runs in the top of the eighth, once more taking the lead. However, the Senators responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Queen would start the rally with a walk and scored the first run when Flores got walked with the bases loaded. Then Euart scored on a wild pitch by the Giants pitcher. Another wild pitch let Logan Tribble (Wofford) come across the plate, and an error by the catcher on that same play scored Flores as well, giving the Senators their sixth and seventh runs of the game.
Tribble had an outstanding day at the plate. The left fielder went 4-4 with three singles and a solo home run. He came around to score three out of the four times he reached base.
The final two runs the Senators gained in the eighth came from a Chet Bowling (Winthrop) two RBI single, leading to the 9-5 win against the Giants.
Tomorrow, the Southern Maryland Senators face off against the Alexandria Aces at Regency Furniture Stadium.
