The Southern Maryland Senators are now 2-0 at home as they defeated the Alexandria Aces 7-3.
In the first inning, the Aces struck first. Brayden Heubner scored on a Jovan Gill single, and Gavin Miller came across due to an errant throw to second base to catch the runner stealing second base.
The Senators would respond with two runs in the bottom of the second. With Senators occupying all bases, Nick Flores (VCU) hit a single that scored Danny Surowiec (Boston College) and Calvin Cook (Middle Tennessee).
A third run was put on the board in the third inning when Lucas Grantham (Wofford) scored on a Dawson Smail (Xavier) single.
The Senators had the most success in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits.
Logan Tribble (Wofford) extended his on-base streak. He has now reached base successfully in his last eleven plate appearances.
Until this point, the Senators mainly had scored their runs through RBI singles. It wasn’t until Carter Groen (UConn) stepped to the plate that they had a huge hit.
On a 0-1 pitch, Groen sent one rocketing over the left centerfield wall, earning a trot around the bases. Groen’s three-run home run blew it open for the Senators as they held a 7-2 lead over the Aces until the ninth inning.
The Aces scored one more run in the ninth, but the Senators held on to their lead. Despite giving up one run, Tyler Mitchell (Norfolk State) kept the lead and finished the game for the Senators.
The Southern Maryland Senators return home Friday to play the Metro South County Braves.
