The 2024 CRSCBL championship rematch between the Bethesda Big Train and the Southern Maryland Senators ended with the Senators winning 6-2.
The day before, Southern Maryland suffered a hard loss against the Alexandria Aces, who snapped their win streak. They were looking to jump back into the win column but knew it wouldn't be easy against Big Train.
After Big Train threatened to score in the first, leaving the bases loaded, the Senators scored three runs, starting with a Nick Flores (VCU) single. With Flores on second and Dawson Smail (Xavier), who reached base thanks to a walk, Carter Groen (UConn) singled, and with the help of an error by the Big Train's centerfielder, both runners came across the plate. The next batter, Danny Surowiec (Boston College), doubled, bringing Groen home.
Logan Bingham (Middle Tennessee) started the game for the Senators, gliding through four innings and giving up only one run. With Bingham preserving the lead in his last inning in the top of the fourth, the Senators came up in the bottom of the inning and added one more insurance run as left fielder Alex Martin (Gulf Coast CC) doubled and then scored when Flores followed suit, trading places with Martin.
In the seventh inning, Southern Maryland tacked on two more runs when Chet Bowling (Winthrop) hit one over the left field wall for a two-run home run.
Despite Big Train getting one more run in the sixth, the Senators' bullpen excelled in keeping the notorious offense at bay with only two total runs. This is the first game in the season where Big Train has scored less than three runs. Allen Miller (Sheperd) and Luke Emory (Fairmont State) combined for four innings pitched in relief, both doing exceptionally well in overpowering Big Train batters. In the ninth, Koen Bowling (Mount. St. Mary's) came to close things out, sitting Big Train down in order, leading the Senators to their tenth win.
On Tuesday, June 24th, the Senators will play a makeup game at home against the Silver-Spring Takoma Thunderbolts, as both teams look to improve their win records.
