Senators Drop Two In A Row, Lose Late to Grays 13-9

After scoring big in the first and eighth innings, the Senators let the game slip away late in the ninth when the D.C. Grays scored five and shut down Southern Maryland to complete their 13-9 win.

Leading off the game, Nick Flores (VCU) singled and, after stealing second, he scored on an Adam Troch (Duke) base hit. During Steven Kraus's (Binghamton) at bat, Troch stole second and then came across the plate when Kraus hit a double. One batter later, Logan Tribble (Wofford) singled and tacked the Senators' third stolen base that inning. Kraus later scored when Danny Surowiec (Boston College) hit an RBI groundout to second. The final run came around to score from Tribble due to a passed ball.

In the top of the second, two walks killed the rhythm that starting pitcher Mark Loubier (Florida Atlantic) had in the first inning. The Grays managed to score three runs on just two hits, making it a close game early.

Both the Senators and Grays scored one run in the third, but the Grays tied the game in the fourth when an error by Surowiec allowed Eli Owens to score.

One inning later, the Grays scored three, two of them coming into score due to another error, to take the lead.

The score would remain the same until the bottom of the eighth when the Senators managed to put up another four-spot to take the lead by one run. Even though the first two batters got out, the Senators' offense rallied, all starting when Dawson Smail (Xavier) drew a two-out walk. Up next, Lucas Grantham (Georgia State) reached base because of an error. Both Smail and Grantham came around to score when Cale Vinson (Middle Tennessee) hit a double, putting the Senators within one. A Flores double, scoring Vinson, tied the game, and a Troch single scored Flores, which set the Senators ahead.

However, the Senators' lead was short-lived, as the Grays scored five runs in the very next inning.

Dawson Wetherald (Mt. Aloysius), who pitched great in his first two innings in relief, came out to try to finish out the ninth. The right-hander threw only one-third of the inning and gave up four runs on three hits.

The bottom of the ninth was strenuous for the Senators. The first two batters of the innings reached base, but then the Grays made a pitching change.

Colin Casey came in and was able to shut down the next three batters, finishing the game strong.

With a record of now 10-4, the Senators are back at home on June 26th to face the Metro South County Braves.
