Senators Win Big, Defeating The Grays In Five Innings 8-1
7/20/2025by Grace Morris

The Southern Maryland Senators were back at home for only the second time since June 26th, playing in a must-win game against the D.C. Grays to stay above .500 and remain in second place in the South Division. To be in a good spot for the playoffs in the upcoming week, the Senators needed to pull out a win. Despite storms being in the forecast, the game was completed just after five innings because of weather, with the Senators winning 8-1.

The scoring for the Senators started right away in the first after Logan Tribble (Wofford) hit a two-out single. Tribble made it to third after stealing second and then advancing to third due to a throwing error by the Grays' catcher. It allowed him to score easily on a Steven Kraus (Binghamton) RBI single.

In the second inning, the Senators pushed another run across the board, taking advantage of free passes and miscues by the Grays. Jax Nichols (Motlow State CC) led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, and he came around to score when a pitch with the bases loaded hit Adam Troch (Duke).

In the bottom of the fourth, the Senators managed to score six runs, increasing their lead to seven.

Southern Maryland was able to bat around that inning, all starting with an MJ Phillips (Towson) walk. Cale Vinson (Middle Tennessee) then singled. The following batter, Dawson Smail (Xavier), also walked, loading the bases and turning over the lineup. On the second pitch of Nick Flores' at-bat, he hit an RBI single, bringing home Phillips and Vinson

Troch was next to the plate, and yet again, he was hit by the pitch, loading the bases. A single by Tribble moved everybody up a base, scoring Smail. The Senators' fourth run of the inning was scored by another bases-loaded hit by pitch to Kraus. The bases were still loaded when Danny Surowiec (Boston College) came up to bat, and he managed to walk, bringing home another run. Finally, the sixth run of the inning for the Senators came when Phillips hit a sacrifice fly that scored Tribble.

Pitching was great for Southern Maryland. Nick Wimberly (Florida Atlantic) got the start on the mound and he pitched a dominant four innings, only allowing three hits and one run while striking out six.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the game was called due to weather, resulting in an 8-1 win for the Senators.
