This season was like no other in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League. Between multiple rain delays, cancelations, and even a nine-game win streak, the regular season has ended for the Southern Maryland Senators, and the playoffs begin today.
The Senators have clinched a playoff spot for the third year in a row after their 6-3 win against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts on Monday. This is the second consecutive year that they will be the four-seed within the playoffs.
If the Senators win, they will either face the two-seed, the Alexandria Aces, whom they faced in the semifinals last year, or the top-seed, the Bethesda Big Train, whom Southern Maryland faced in the championship last season.
As the four-seed this year, the Senators ended their season over .500 for the first time in franchise history, an improvement from last season. Outfielders Logan Tribble (Wofford) and Adam Troch (Duke) lead the way for the Senators, as both are tied with 23 runs scored. Tribble leads Southern Maryland in RBIs (21) and batting average (.380) and is second in the league in that category. While Troch leads in stolen bases (22) and hits (40).
Last season, the Grays failed to make the playoffs; however, this year is a different story. They clinched the five-seed on Monday after their loss to the Cropdusters. Yesterday, they played in the play-in round of the playoffs and beat the Metro South County Braves 6-7.
The game between the five-seeded Grays and the four-seeded Senators begins at 7:00 PM at Woodbridge High School.
