The Southern Maryland Senators' season has come to an end after a 7-4 loss in game three against the Bethesda Big Train.
The contest started well for the Senators, as lead-off batter Logan Tribble (Wofford) reached base due to an error in the top of the first inning. Tribble wreaked havoc on the base paths as he stole second, stole third, and then advanced home on an errant throw by Dylan Murphy.
However, Big Train responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Peyton Steele hit an RBI double, scoring two runs for Bethesda.
Those two runs would be the only ones that starting pitcher Allen Miller (Shepherd) would let up until the bottom of the fifth inning.
No additional scoring occurred in the game from either side until the bottom of the fifth came around, and that's when Big Train managed to score another run after Josh Skowronski hit a home run.
But the Senators responded in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Chet Bowling (Winthrop) hit a single. Then Dawson Smail (Brookdale CC) came in to pinch run for Bowling.
Soon after, Cale Vinson (Middle Tennessee) worked a walk, and Calvin Cook (Middle Tennessee) hit a single, which loaded the bases. Cook flipped the lineup over, and Tribble hit a hard ground ball that resulted in an error, scoring Smail. Two batters later, Steven Kraus (Binghamton) walked, bringing another run home.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, when Diego Barrett (North Carolina A&T) found himself in some trouble, Scott Middleton called in MJ Phillips (Towson) from the bullpen. With only two prior pitching outings — both in which Phillips did well — the left-hander ultimately let up three runs, one of them being unearned.
The Senators were able to make it a one-run game in the seventh when Carter Groen (LaSalle) led off the inning with a walk and came around to score when Cook hit a pop-up beyond third base that dropped. However, Smail was out advancing to third.
In the eighth inning, the final dagger against the Senators came. Big Train scored two runs on a Skowronski single.
Unable to manufacture two runs, the Southern Maryland Senators ended up losing game three of the semifinals, ending their season.
